Addictive Behaviours Result In Life Problems
By Janno Damgaard Lassen
When we hear the words addictive behaviors, we immediately think of drug addicts popping a needle into a vein or swallowing some pills. Think a broader picture for addictive behaviors are widely spread. Take a look around you, at your own behavior patterns and those of your friends and family members.
You may go shopping for a much needed pair of boots and come home hours later, credit cards maxed with arms filled with packages containing items you truly do not need. Are these addictive behaviours? You systematically eat your way though a box of candy bars. How many of your friends go out for a beer and end up sleeping on the doorstep like all the other times? We seldom even consider any of the above examples as being addictive behaviors. We simply think they are quirky.
That is far from the truth; there are endless variations of addictive behaviors that people indulge in on a daily basis. What needs to be understood is that the majority these actions have underlying reasons that often do not even get acknowledged. However, addictions of any sort are not easy to stop once you are caught up in them. Addictive behaviours entail a lot more than simply a bad habit.
Know The Signs Of Addictive Behaviours
Addictive behaviors cause ever widening problems in an individual’s life such as a shopping addiction. This is not when a person shows bad judgment in shopping and comes home with a pair of neon purple stiletto heeled boots. Addictive behaviours are when you walk into the shop fully prepared to buy only what is on your written list and you stagger home a few hours later with bags and bags of items. Everything has turned to a blur and you cannot even remember how many times your card was swiped.
Then the second blow of addictive behaviours is when the bills start coming in and you stare in horror. There is no justification as to why you bought those items. This is when the shopping addict becomes secretive. Hiding behavior from partners is a good indication of addictive behaviours. Relationships start to suffer. The question of mounting debts adds to the never ending destruction.
Almost anything can become turn into addictive behaviors; eating too much, eating too little, shopping, gambling, drinking, drugs, collecting specific items, cleaning up already clean rooms, folding laundry repeatedly. The lists of addictive behaviours are truly endless. What must be realized is that what drives these addictive behaviors are patterns of depression. We feel out of control of our lives. We focus on one specific activity until we can lose ourselves into this small, safe world we have created. This is when addictive behaviours are really controlling us.
