Hypnosis – The Myths & Misconceptions

By Janno Damgaard Lassen

Myth #1: Not everyone can be hypnotised, because you have to believe in it for it to work…

Truth #1: Everyone and everybody can be hypnotized if they are willing to follow directions, and we all use hypnosis in some form or another every single day.
What many people call daydreaming, is a trance like state, and we are all capable of daydreaming, and therefore also capable of being hypnotised if we wish to.

Fantasizing or imagining things I bypassing the conscious mind, and that is the nature of hypnosis, another thing everybody is capable of…
So to say it like it is, we can all be hypnotised if we want to, but we can also withstand if we so want.

Myth #2: When you are hypnotised the hypnotist controls your every move, and you will be under his spell.

Truth #2: What this myth refers too, is what we see on tv or at a hypnosis show, but here you have to remember that when you do this kind of hypnosis, you make a deal with the hypnotist that you are under his spell, and when in trance, what you tell your mind, will be your reality.

When doing hypnosis in a therapeutic environment, you will always be able to get up and leave at any point in the session if the hypnotherapist does something inappropriate. But if the hypnotist builds the correct rapport before the trance, you will not want too, hypnosis is a very nice experience of complete relaxation and calm in almost every single case.

Myth #3: Hypnosis puts me so deep under, that I am as unaware, as if I were sleeping or unconscious.

Truth #3: Lets think for a moment how deep you will go under… if you are to be hypnotised, you have to follow directions from the hypnotist, and that is not possible if you are unaware… So that really says it all, you are aware… perhaps at another level then when not being in trance, but you will be so aware that if the hypnotist died, and the room caught fire, you would automatically emerge from hypnosis by yourself.

Myth #4: I risk getting stuck in hypnosis.

Truth #4: There is no risk at all for you to get stuck in a hypnotic state, the hypnotic state is a natural state that we go in and out of several times every day, however you may feel so relaxed and enjoying your trance so much that you will want to stay longer in this state, this is perfectly normal, as you relax deeply your mind starts releasing endorphins in your body, and that makes the relaxation feel even better, you will probably feel better in hypnosis than you have felt for a long time, if ever before.

All Hypnosis Is Self hypnosis

What you always have to remember is that all hypnosis is self hypnosis, you are the one creating the trance, the hypnotist is just a guide, he knows the techniques that produces the level of trance needed, and he can guide you through the session working with your subconscious mind as per the interview before the session.

If you have any other concerns or questions about hypnosis or self hypnosis, please leave a comment and I will do my best to address the issue.
